Designing Corporate Logos For Construction Firms
The construction sector is getting increasingly competitive. Larger organizations handle the major development projects while smaller and newer firms must display their quality with several subcontracts before moving on to bigger ones.
My design agency has just been presented an assignment to produce a new construction logo design for a local construction organization. To get things going, the art director and I dropped by our client’s office for a short meeting to gather more information about the company.
Like many other companies we have interviewed, most companies recognize they need a new image to help them compete but are not quite sure what they want. That is where our services come in handy.
Before embarking on the logo design, we normally inquire about the history of the company, its turnover, its goals, its specialty, its target market and the reason it wants a new construction logo design; just to get a better understanding of things.
We ascertained that they are a relatively young firm, 8 years in the business with 4 major subcontract projects and many minor ones under their belts, each one more impressive than the last. They are now looking to adopt a blue ocean strategy and proceed into eco-friendly medium cost suburban development - a niche with very few competitors - and thus taking the opportunity to build a reputation for themselves as one of the few companies to engage this niche.
From the interview, we can gather that they have the required resources to handle medium scale development projects. Their identified niche has made it much easier to tell them apart from other developers.
At our office, we had our normal brainstorming session and and decided on the conceptual direction. Following that we designated 4 designers to produce individual interpretations or logo samples to turn those ideas to images.
After a few days, the logo concepts were ready for viewing. Some designs utilized stylized text while others made use of construction related graphics like hammers and countersink bits to get the point across. Though all 4 construction logo design samples were unique in their own way, they all clung to two major points.
Professionalism
Developers deal with costly projects. As a prerequisite to be awarded such projects, they must always be regarded as a professional and responsible organization with excellent business ethics. Hence, the neat and clear designs reflected that appropriately.
Eco-Friendliness
This is the niche this firm has set out to penetrate. Naturally, the designs, either by color or graphics, further impresses the company’s commitment to the preservation of the environment.
Now it is up to our clients to decide on which of the four designs they prefer. Alternatively they could make minor changes but as professional designers, we must ensure the design in the end keeps to the key points noted earlier.
